McALLEN, Texas (ValleyCentral) — IDEA Public Schools celebrated its graduating classes as they announced their college choices at College Signing Day.

Nearly 1,500 IDEA seniors in the Rio Grande Valley have been accepted to a four-year college.

The event spans two days during four different events for various IDEA RGV schools on Wednesday and Thursday.

College Signing Day is the culmination of years of hard work and marks a momentous occasion in each student’s academic journey.

Students from this year’s graduating classes across the district will accept spots at Boston University, Colgate University, Brown University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas at Austin, Notre Dame University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and more.

“With all regions of our graduating classes combined, including San Antonio and Greater Austin area, we’ve had over 11,000 acceptance letters, with our RGV scholars making up over 7,000 of those acceptances,” said Jeff Cottrill, Ed.D., IDEA Public Schools CEO & Superintendent. “Out of our entire RGV 2024 class, over 50% received acceptances into selective and highly selective different colleges and universities across the U.S. and beyond, and about 70% are first-generation attending college. We are proud of our students and celebrate their success in their educational journey.”

Each student has their own unique story and has overcome various personal challenges to get to this moment.

“My academic journey hasn’t been easy to say the least,” said IDEA Senior, Jesse Alanis. “I have unfortunately lost both of my parents at a young age. Joining IDEA was the best decision that they have made, as I am able to focus on my academics here.”

The event continues tomorrow at the McAllen Convention Center.
